Hello!

I’m Marianne, and this is a project where I draw pictures of the things I’ve sewn, and reflect on the experience of making (and wearing) those things. Thank you for visiting!

Pattern: Adria Top by Seamwork
Fabric: Cotton lawn from Mood Fabrics
Sewn Up: Spring 2019

On Valentine’s Day this year, I met my twin sister Katherine in New York City for our first-ever visit to Mood.

We have been learning to sew together from afar – her in Boston, me in DC. While we both experienced the same headfirst fall into sewing (“how did we not know this was a thing we could do?” we kept asking each other early on), we have pretty different approaches. She muslins everything multiple times to get the most perfect glovelike fit – I muslin only occasionally and prefer boxier garments. She sews mostly in solid colors of linen – I sew almost exclusively in colorful prints. She loves complicated 24-piece patterns – I love a simple sew.

Despite our different tastes, however, Katherine and I both admired the same fabric at Mood - a black lawn confettied with bright tulips in reds and oranges. We each left with our own yardage of it, and in the months after our trip, she sewed hers up into an incredibly well-fitting Kew dress, while I sewed mine into a nice boxy Adria. 🙂 We haven’t been in the same city since, but hopefully there is a twin photo shoot (recalling the matching outfits of our youth) sometime in our futures!

Throwback: Katherine on the left, me on the right.
